KELMĖ REGION –
the treasury of culture and nature.
When being at the old trader’s road “Via Hanza” Kelmė attracts the visitors by its
region variety: striking turnings of Dubysa, Venta and 29 more rivers, 53 lakes – pure
as dew, more than 400 objects of culture heritage.
Interesting and richly visited one of hydrological nature objects – Svilė springs
(Šaukėnai doyen region). Tytuvėnai churches have large architectural worth. This is a
monastery ensemble that characterizes its variety of architectural styles and is involved
into European Union culture program “Baroque track” („Baroko kelias“). Apart

• Kelmė region museum
Kelmė is located on the left bank of Kražantė. From the other side near Kražantė
affluent Vilbėnas dam the city is decorated with magnificent Kelmė manor house. Kelmė
region museum is established here. Expositions are located in three buildings: in the
manor, gates and garner. Kelmė manor ensemble (XVIII age) is guarded by nation as rare
baroque style manor homestead of Lithuania province. Since now nine manor buildings of
this homestead are extant. One of them – the oldest garner in Lithuania (1716). More
than 300 years Kelmė manor was controlled by Polish origin noblemen Gruževskiai
(Gruzewski). Kelmė manor is a place where 1831 year’s rebellion against tsarist Russia
had originated. The only one herd of buffaloes in the Baltic States is at grass in Kelmė
vicinity. Lithuanian woman and German man keep more than 10 buffaloes near Kelmė. Such
farm is the only one in the Baltic States.

• Kražiai is the most
significant historical place of Lower Lithuania.
16 km towards the west from Kelmė you will find Kražiai town – one of the oldest villages in Lithuania. For several centuries it was the center
of Catholicism, education, politics and administrative purpose. Famous urban and history
values: college building of the Revival Style (the beginning of XVII age) and church
ensemble (XVIII–XIX age). Since XVII age Kražiai was famous as education center in
Lithuania: it had a college and gymnasium. Famous people had studied and worked there.
Famous professors M. Sarbievijus, K. Kojelavičius and others were teaching here. Worthy
to see nature monuments are round Kražiai. Especially famous and legendary is
Medžiokalnis. It pulls lot of people to the festivals that proceed there. Renewed
Kražiai College is waiting for the visitors. Ethnographical museum is established, the
conferences are organized and tourism information center is working here. There is famous
Kražiai church where the remarkable Kražiai massacre had happened… Namely in Kražiai
it is necessary to visit legendary Medžiokalnis and Vytautas hill.

• Tytuvėnai
is a country of Kelmė region that is defined by nature, architectural and art monuments.
The researcher of Lithuania history Teodoras Narbutas supposed there an existing castle in
XIII age. The legends tell that there is a path in the lake that guide from the mound to
the island. Also it is believed that there are masonry cellars in the vault of the mound
and also the treasure. Beautiful look church and monastery ensemble are almost unchanged
since now. It is one of the striking not only in Lithuania but also in all Northern
Europe. Apart from respectable and rich history Tytuvėnai is famous by its unique nature,
the range of lakes, old forest, marshlands and famous and respectable people that came
from Tytuvėnai. It is a possibility in Tytuvėnai regional park to go for a ride with
bicycles along fitted routes, to walk along cognitive paths, to overlook the surroundings
from the review tower and to swim by boats or water bicycles.

• In the reconstructed Užventis
manor various culture events happen.Private wellness center with a hotel of 50
places functions in the reconstructed old water mill. Also – renewed garner where
regional museum and other buildings are located. Writer Šatrijos Ragana was living in
this manor during 1887–1898.
• Užventis city is
surrounded by a lot of beautiful forests and lakes. There is a hydrographic reservation of
Venta headwaters and Šatrija landscape reservations. Also there are Jungiris oak which is
protected by nation (Pabutkalniukas village), Martynas pine (in Plikšilis forest),
Alkakalnis (Pavandenė village).
